Classroom Environment
2a. Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport
Indicators include: • Respectful talk, active listening, and turn-taking • Acknowledgment of students’ backgrounds and lives outside the classroom • Body language indicative of warmth and caring shown by teacher and students • Physical proximity • Politeness and encouragement • Fairness
Although my rating for this domain was the same after 3 years, I believe my growth is very evident in the specific feedback. By this year not only were my class expectations posted and communicated but within my lesson, I had evidence of students working collaboratively. I used the expectations to provide students with real-time positive feedback and encouragement.

2d. Managing Student Behavior
Indicators include: • Clear standards of conduct, possibly posted, and possibly referred to during a lesson • Absence of acrimony between teacher and students concerning behavior • Teacher awareness of student conduct • Preventive action when needed by the teacher • Absence of misbehavior • Reinforcement of positive behavior
During my first year at Global Commerce, I made the mistake of thinking that my age and race alone were enough to help me manage my students. When Principal Vizcaino and Assistant Principal Robertson took leadership of our school, they established school-wide norms that were reinforced throughout the school. This allowed me to hold students accountable to the norms by having something to refer to when addressing their behavior.

Lab Stars!
"'If the young are not initiated in the tribe, they will burn down the village just to feel its warmth.' "
When students first get to my classroom, not many of them are enthusiastic about science. Lab Stars is my way of initiating students into to my classroom community and to becoming lifelong STEM Learners. The secret is that Lab Stars aren't just the "good kids". My one rule, is that every student becomes a Lab Star and gets their picture on the wall, as proof. By January students are excited to earn the lab coat. Also, they get to see how dope they look in a lab coat.
